In the summer between our daughter Julianna’s junior and senior years in high school, she got focused. She heard a speaker say that in order to be great at something you need to do it at least 10,000 times. Julianna was a good basketball player and wanted to be much better. She decided that she would shoot her basketball that summer until she made 10,000 baskets. Because of her summer job, she would often be unable to get into the gym until 10 pm or later. Many, many nights she came home near midnight after shooting for a couple of hours.

Julianna bball 3Today, the orange and white basketball she used that summer is encased in her room. She probably doesn’t care that much about it, but her mother and I were so impressed with her singular focus that we wanted it to be a lasting memory.

As Christians on mission with God, it is imperative that we stay focused on the work at hand. There are so many distractions in this world and often we lose our focus on the most important things and spend far too much of our energy on seemingly urgent matters.

We must stay focused on our intimacy with Christ. If we lose this, we cannot be productive and fruitful. In the midst of my very busy schedule, I am totally committed to reading through the Bible every year. Every week, I make sure that I have stayed on track with my Bible reading plan. Other things may seem more urgent and no one will know if I keep up or not, but the Word of God is critical to my spiritual success, so I stay focused on it.

We must stay focused on sharing Christ in word and deed with others. Recently, as I was on a four state speaking tour, God gave me two amazing opportunities to seriously impact the lives of people outside of my speaking events. One of those meetings was at a laundromat down the street from my hotel. The other one was in the waiting area of an airport. I was very tired and under a lot of pressure, but somehow the Holy Spirit helped me not to miss those beautiful opportunities. Thankfully, I was able to leave a copy of my book with both individuals. My ministry will continue into the future in their lives.

What do you need to do to re-focus your life? Are you investing the right amount of time and energy in the right places and people? Get focused on the things that matter the most, and watch God do His work through you!
